Other Resources and Guides

  1. Step One: Make sure you can have a child care business in your home
    1. Contact the Zoning Department for your city, county or other municipality.  The City of Brighton has provided information on their process here.  ECPAC hopes to receive similar information for other municipalities.
    2. Please note: HOAs can no longer deny you the ability to start a Family Child Care Home business per legislation.
  2. Step Two: Read “The Rules and Regulations Governing Licensed Family Child Care Homes, Special Activities and General Rules for All Child Care Providers.
  3. Step Three: Apply for a Family Child Care Home License
    1. Complete your application and mail it to the CDHS with the following:
      1. Correct Licensing Fee
      2. Information on both primary applicants and everyone living in the house
      3. Proof of Lawful Residence Form, one for each primary applicant
      4. Photocopy of Government Issued Photo ID
      5. Results of your TRAILS Child Abuse and Neglect Records Check
    2. Fingerprinting – CBI and FBI Background Checks
      1. You must have a license number to complete fingerprint checks. Turn in your application and receive this number before scheduling your fingerprint check
      2. Must use an approved vendor (list on the Office of Early Childhood website)
      3. The Background Check Fee is paid to the vendor.
      4. Complete the Privacy Act Notification and bring it with you to fingerprinting.

  4. Step Four: Register for your classes with A CareGiver Network
    1. 15 hour Family Child Care Pre-Licensing Course approved by the Colorado Office of Early Childhood
    2. First Aid and CPR for infant, child and adult
    3. Standard Precautions (control of bodily substances and minimizing the spread of germs and disease)
    4. Medication Administration
      1. Full Instructor Version – All training done in classroom setting.
      2. Hybrid Version – Online Modules and Hands-On Instructor Assessment within 30 days of modules
  5. Step Five: Additional Required Trainings
    1. Register for the Professional Development Information System (PDIS) to complete additional classes prior to working with children.
    2.  Mandatory Trainings for Family Child Care Home Providers
  6. Step Six: Call Licensing and schedule your inspection
