Description:
Are you frequently frustrated by negative behavior shown by children? Do you have that one child that makes you sweat all morning? Do you feel like you spend your whole day putting out fires? Understanding how children perceive the world and what influences their behavior can be your super power. Come have a candid conversation about what we know about child development, developmental milestones, and child behavior. Topics we will discuss include how young children learn, what gets in the way of their learning, commonly misunderstood characteristics of child development, and strategies for success. You will leave better equipped to navigate the dynamics of young children and specific strategies to apply to your teacher practice. Don’t let negative behavior be your kryptonite!

Strengthening Relationships with Young Children: The Role of Power in Early Childhood Settings

Learning Objectives:
Discuss and define the three types of power that are used in early childhood settings
Understand how power impact relationships with children
Set goals to empower children

Description:
Understanding how power dynamics influence relationships with young children is an important part of being a conscious and reflective educator. Understanding these same power dynamics also supports in creating a socially just and culturally aware classroom. In this session, three types of power that often impact teacher-child relationships will be discussed including Power On, Power For and Power With. Information on what each type of Power looks like in early childhood settings including their impact on relationships with young children will be examined. Early childhood teachers will have the opportunity to explore ways to move from using Power On with children to Power For or Power With to strengthen relationships with children in their care.

Mindfulness Practices in the Early Childhood Setting

Learning Objectives:
Analyze the research, process and benefits of incorporating mindfulness strategies in the early childhood setting and develop an understanding of how mindfulness practices have been proven to support the social-emotional well-being of both teachers and students and its impact on student learning.
Review specific age-appropriate strategies for incorporating mindfulness practices into the classroom and examine examples of how other educators are successfully doing so.
Develop an action plan for adding 2-3 mindfulness based practices into the routine for teachers and students

Description:
Mindfulness practices, such as yoga and meditation, are frequently being used in early childhood classrooms to help enhance the well-being of both teachers and students. The incorporation of mindfulness practices in early childhood classrooms is important because it can help students develop a mindset of kindness, tolerance, and peace in our often fast-paced culture. Such practices also improve mental health, social skills and behavior, and can counteract the effects of bullying. The goal of this presentation is to educate and empower participants to enhance the well-being of their own life and classroom through mindfulness practices. In this session we will discuss social-emotional learning, meditation, philosophy, affirmations, and age specific strategies for incorporating such practices into the school day.
