Teens who are Expecting or Parenting

If you have just found out you are expecting a child – please know you can talk to your school social worker who will help you determine what will be most helpful to you in finishing school, taking care of your new baby, and taking care of you!

  • Receiving prenatal care is critical to your health and the health of your baby. Your doctor or school health clinic will help you find prenatal care.

School Services for you and your child:

Staying in school is important and your school social worker can help you determine what options are best for you.  If you are looking for a school that also has a quality child care on-site – here are some of the metro-area programs.  If you choose to stay in your current school or district, how to find quality child care and apply for assistance is at the bottom of this page.  Also know you can get your GED through the age of 21 if this is a needed option for you.

  • Hope House is metro-Denver’s only resource providing free self-sufficiency programs to parenting teen moms, including Residential, High School & GED and College & Career Programs. Additional supportive services include parenting and healthy relationships classes, an Early Learning Program, health and wellness, financial literacy and personal growth classes as well as certified counseling, all designed to prepare them for long-term independence.   • New Legacy Charter School: Two generations ready for the world! New Legacy Charter School, a school for pregnant and parenting teens (mothers and fathers) accepts applications on a rolling basis. The high school curriculum focuses on personalization and interest-based learning.  And New Legacy’s award-winning Early Learning Center located in the same building is ready for their children!   • Florence Crittenton educates, prepares, and empowers teen mothers and their children. Teen moms can receive a high school diploma at Florence Crittenton High School, a Denver Public Schools high school for only pregnant and parenting teen moms. Children ages 6 weeks through Pre-K of teen moms enrolled at the high school can learn and grow at the Florence Crittenton Services Early Childhood Education Center right next to the high school. Our Student and Family Support program provides individual social-emotional support to all young moms enrolled. For more information call 720-423-8900
  • Goal High School  is a free public charter school serving students in grades 9-12 through age 20. We provide a laptop computer & wifi hotspots for students to use while enrolled in school. The computer does not cost the student or family anything for usage,and is returned at the end of each school year.  Locations throughout the state of Colorado & the surrounding counties in Adams’ county we have Thornton, Commerce City, Brighton, Aurora, and Lakewood.  Children are welcome at our student drop-in sites, but childcare is not provided. 
  • Aurora Public Schools Young Parent Support Program is available to any pregnant and/or parenting student (male or female) attending an APS school. If you live in the APS area, are under the age of 21 and have not finished high school or obtained a GED, YPSP is able to help you enroll into an educational program that fits your needs

  • ECPAC Family Support Specialists can help you in determining what might be most supportive and help you connect to resources you want. Contact Melissa at 720-364-6817.
  • Partners in Parenting Education
  • Nurse Family Partnership (NFP): A program for First time moms who are pregnant through 30 days post-delivery. Free personal nurse provides resources, help in accessing services and parenting support through the child’s second birthday. For more information contact: Kimberly at 720-295-1355 or khirst@iik.org
  • Parents as Teachers (PAT): This program is for families with children age 0-5. Parent Educators are certified and highly trained, teaching children and parents the necessary skills for children to succeed in school. Home visits are now being done virtually.   • Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY): is a home visitation, school readiness program that prepares you and your child for the first day of Kindergarten.   • Safe Care: is a flexible, free in-home visiting program for families with at least one child in the home, five years of age or younger. The program offers three topics to choose from and each topic can last six to eight visits. For information contact: 720-492-9086 or safecare@thefamilytree.org.
  • Nurse Support Program (NSP): The Nurse Support Program is a nurse home visitation program for families that live in Adams County. The nurses visit in the home to help families with parenting and health questions, finding resources to reach employment and financial goals, have a healthy pregnancy, improve the health of their children, and to find community resources.   • Connect with resources through Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) which provides free nutritious foods and nutrition education to improve the health of participating families that include pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women, infants and children up to the age of 5 years.

Groups and Programs

  • MotherWise: This free program includes 6 weeks of workshops plus one-on-one coaching for pregnant women and moms with infants. Child care and free transportation provided.
  • Mommy Mingle: A place to connect with other moms that is led by lactation specialists and other medical professionals. Call 303-498-1481.
  • Young Lives: program that offers support and mentoring, as well as a club and camp, for teen mothers.
  • Anythink Libraries: has a variety of groups and classes that you can do with your little one, including “Baby Bounce,” “Explore the Floor,” and “Baby Play Date.”

Pregnancy-Related / Postpartum Depression and Anxiety

Pregnancy-Related/Postpartum Depression/Anxiety is the most common complication of child birth and can make life and parenting even more difficult. Talking to your doctor or child’s pediatrician about any symptoms you may be experiencing is important.
